Biography

Clare was born in Liverpool and studied Modern Languages and History of Art while a choral scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, but began her professional life as an account director for international advertising company J Walter Thompson before becoming a professional singer.

She has sung with Scottish Opera, Opera North and ENO and, in addition to her appearances on the main stage at the Royal Opera, Clare works regularly with ROH2 at the Royal Opera House on new chamber operas in development and has appeared in several of William Tuckett’s ‘danced theatre’ works.

Her association with composer Stephen McNeff has led to three solo works written for her: Farfalle di Neve and Madrigali dell’Estate – which received London premieres in the Royal Opera’s Crush Room concert series – and A Voice of One Delight, premiered at the 2010 Presteigne Festival.  She has also premiered works by Hugh Wood, Graham Coatman, Dominique LeGendre, Philip Cooke and this year gives first performances of works by Rachel Stott and Donald Lane.

Clare’s more traditional repertoire ranges from Airs de Cour with French baroque ensemble La Réjouissance, to the St Matthew Passion with the Academy of Ancient Music, and includes recitals with pianists Simon Lepper, Lindy Tennent-Brown and Paul Turner in the UK, and Feriel Kaddour in Paris.
